Just a little over an hour east of Nashville, 20 minutes north of Cookeville, sits Cummins Falls State Park. The waterfall is around 75 feet tall, and deposits water into a swimming hole that's perfect for beating the summer heat. This past memorial day weekend, some friends and I decided to make the trip over and experience the falls for ourselves.
The hike to the swimming hole was about two and a half miles there and back. It's relatively steep, and I definitely recommend wearing some kind of water shoe, because you will walk in the river a lot. There's a second trail that leads to an overlook of the falls, where we were able to set up our ENOs and relaxed in the shade. Being Memorial Day weekend, the swimming hole was packed with way more people than my friends had ever seen, so if you do decide to visit, aim for a weekday if possible. If you can't visit on a weekday, don't worry! Everyone is incredibly friendly and there was still tons of room for us to leave our stuff while we explored the falls. It was my sister's birthday this past week, so we decided to drive into Nashville for the day to celebrate. We first ended up at one of my favorite coffee shops, Fido. Nashville has the best coffee shops I have ever been to, and Fido is definitely up there on my list. It's located in Hillsboro Village. When I go in, I get a Grey Skies. It's made with Bergamot simple syrup, coconut milk, espresso, and Olive & Sinclair chocolate shavings. I also have a thing for their Mediterranean Salad, which is served with a crap ton of hummus and pita bread.
After leaving Fido, Christian and I visited shops such as Pangea (where we both bought the sunglasses we're wearing in the photos) and BookManBookWoman Books, and then walked along the south side of Vanderbilt's campus to Fannie Mae Dee's Park. We ended up at Las Paletas on 12 South, which sells Mexican popsicles that we immediately fell in love with. 12 South is an incredibly busy area with tons of amazing restaurants and shops! Every May, thousands of people of all ages gather just south of Nashville for the Iroquois Steeplechase. People arrive adorned in bright colors, floral patterns, giant hats, and patterned bow ties. Those of age sip on mimosas and wine, all the while fanning themselves in the southern heat. Attendees can bring coolers with food and beverages in, minus anything that would be in a glass container.
This year, I grabbed some girls and convinced them to come with me to see why it's one of everyone's favorite events. We set up a picnic blanket and lawn chairs and definitely were not disappointed. Despite the humidity that curled my hair more than my curling iron ever could, everyone was friendly and in high spirits, eager to admire the impeccably well groomed horses and have a blast at the first party of summer. Music played from the center of the ring in between announcements of different sponsors (the biggest sponsor being Vineyard Vines, nonetheless) while we put my friend's new selfie stick to good use. What to bring to Steeplechase: Food/Drinks Picnic Blanket and/or lawn chairs A bunch of friends to have fun with! |
