I bought my first succulent three years ago, just after junior year. About six months later, I noticed that my succulent had started growing taller. Much taller. At first, I thought this was a sign of a healthy, growing succulent. After some research, however, I learned that this was a sign my little guy wasn't getting enough sunlight. I quickly moved it to a south facing window in my house, since this is where most of the sunlight is in the northern hemisphere, but the damage was done. My succulent was extremely stretched out and not at all how I wanted it to look. While there was no way for me to force it back down, I learned my answer lied in succulent propagation. I wanted to walk other people through the process, if they were facing similar issues with their succulents. Propagation is the process of essentially cutting off the head of a succulent and allowing it to regrow as a new plant entirely. The next step is to wait. If you were to immediately replant the cuttings, they would die of root rot. I like to wait anywhere from 1-2 weeks to let the ends of the cuttings and leaves callous over. Then, I can start replanting. When choosing a soil to replant with, make sure to grab a well-draining soil. The two most popular ways to kill a succulent are 1. Not giving the plant direct sunlight and 2. Drowning the plant by over-watering or not planting it in a wel-draining soil.
After you've waited 1-2 weeks, you can plant your cuttings! Place your leaves on top of soil and spray them with water once or twice a week. You'll soon see little roots starting to grow out of them, and then little plants! Place the plants in solid and cover the stem. They will eventually take root and continue to grow! When watering the succulents, be sure to only water them once a week to prevent root rot. And don't forget to place them in a spot where they can get plenty of direct sunlight. Enjoy your new succulents! Much Love, Vikka
