We continued our trip up the Rhine into Germany. After the first day, I got incredibly sick and had to sit out a day (the day we went to Strasbourg, non the less). After that, it was smooth sailing all the way up the river. We made stops in cities like Freiburg, Hollental, Heidelberg, and Cologne. There were many villages when we initially entered Germany, then we started entering into larger cities as we traveled farther north.
In the cities between Mainz and Neuwied, there are dozens of castles dotting the steep slopes surrounding the river. The grape vines in the area grow at almost 90 degree angles, making for a treacherous gathering season The Cathedral was also a huge highlight. took hundreds of years to build, and managed to survive WWII with many battle scars (including a destroyed column). We just so happened to reach Cologne on the day of the gay pride festival and parade, so the streets were packed and the people came from all different parts of Europe to celebrate. We only have one more country left before we go home, and man I am so not ready! Much Love, Vikka
